Francis (Frank) Hempe was born 26 November 1852 in Monroe County, IL, son of Joseph Hempe and Catherine B. Schiefferdecker. Frank married Caroline Kalmer, daughter of Mathias Kalmer and Catherine Kleyer, on 28 November 1883. Four of their children were born in Monroe County, IL: George Anthony, b. 16 November 1884; Adele Christine (known as Ida), born 30 October 1886; Albert, born 8 February 1889; and Peter Sylvester, born 25 March 1892. By 1900 the family had moved to Union Co., OR where Frank purchased a farm and worked it with his brother Anton B. Hempe. Their father, Joseph Hempe, born ca 1810 in Oldenburg, Germany, lived with them until his death 29 January 1899. Two more children were born to Frank and Carolyn: Mary R. Hempe, born 6 May 1896; and Agnes S. Hempe, born 8 April 1901. Frank and Carolyn had 9 children of whom 5 were alive by the 1910 Census. Frank Hempe died 14 December 1916 in WallaWalla, WA.
