WELL KNOWN BUSINESS MAN DIED SATURDAY

This community was greatly shocked last Saturday to hear that Henry 
Wallhaus had passed away at his home in this city at 3 o'clock that 
morning.  While he was ailing now and then, still he was up and around 
most of the time and his death came as a great shock to his family and 
many friends.  He was aged 80 years, 7 month and 26 days.  

Mr. Wallhaus was born in Hanover, Germany, April 7, 1847.  He came 
to this county with his parents at the tender age of seven years the trip 
being made on a sailing vessel and required 11 weeks, and the family
 located at New Hanover.  Later his father purchased what is known as the 
Werling farm, west of our city, where he remained on the farm up to 1882, 
in which year he bought out the hardware business of John Moeller and has 
been in that business ever since.  

He was twice married.  His first wife was Magdalena Werling, to whom he 
was married Nov. 26, 1868.  Four children resulted of this union, only one, 
George Wallhaus, of Los Angeles, Cal., survives.  His first wife died in 1885, 
and May 22, 1887, he married to Miss Katherine Amend, who with four 
children, Mrs. Armin Kolmer, Herman, Arthur and Louis Wallhaus, survive 
to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father, a true friend and model citizen.
Mr. Wallhaus was a staunch member of St. Paul's Evangelical church of our 
city and for many years served as trustee of the church.  He was also charter 
member of the Brotherhood, and took active part in all church doings.  He 
was also a member of Waterloo Lodge No. 27  I.O.O.F. and a member of 
the Waterloo Fire Company.

Deceased was a progressive and upright citizen, beloved by all who knew him.  
His word was as good as his bond and his many friends will miss him almost as 
much as his own family as he always had a kind word and ready smile for all.

His remains were laid to rest Monday afternoon in the Waterloo cemetery after
services in St. Paul's Evangelical church by Rev. Brink.  The church was crowded 
with sympathizing relatives and friends who came to pay their last tribute of respect 
to his memory.  His grave was heaped high with flowers lovingly tendered by 
his many friends and business associates.
The sympathy of the entire community is extended the bereaved family in their 
time of deepest sorrow.

Henry (Carl August Heinrich) Wallhaus was the son of Friedrich (Fred) and 
Louise (Wedekind) Wallhausen. He reportedly changed his name to Wallhause 
and later to Wallhaus.

The family originally lived in Denkershausen, a village near Northeim, Germany, 
and Henry was baptized in St. Martin Church in Denkershausen in May 1847.  
The Wallhausen family arrived in New York City on the bark Leontine out of 
Bremen, Germany, on August 28, 1854. According to “Germans to America” 
Volume 8, those arriving included: Friedrich (53), Louise (47), Ernst (21), 
Joanna (later Gentsch) (19), Wilhelm (14), Friedrich (10), Heinrich (7), August 
(5), and Justine (56).

Genealogists in the family have more or less complete information on Joanna, 
Heinrich, August and their descendants, but nothing is known of Ernst, Wilhelm, 
Friedrich, or Justine. Anyone having such information is encouraged to contact
